Roof Top Stories with Ross Metals “The Story Inside The Valley of the Kings!” by Ross Metals

It’s the year 1325BC, ancient Egypt and the King has fallen from his horse, breaking his leg in several places. Although only 18 years old, the strength of his youth isn’t enough for him to succumb to death from blood poisoning due to the open wound. His reign of only 9 years has ended but his legend will one day be that worthy of a true king.

Hastily, a tomb is placed together for the unexpected demise of this young man. He is put to rest within 3 coffins, 2 made of gilded wood and the third, where his mummified remains actually remains, is made of 110.4 kg of pure gold which, in today’s market value comes out to 3.7 million dollars! His body is adorned with a heavy; solid gold mask inlaid with obsidian, turquoise, quartz, lapsis and other precious stones. Next to the mummy are 2 small bodies of little girls who had not quite been born but were, nevertheless, still honored. The king is sealed within his sarcophagus and is placed amongst wooden shrines in the burial chamber of the tomb. There are 3 other rooms inside this tomb: the antechamber, the place where left over material from the funeral is placed such as embalming fluid, the annex is where oils, ointments, scents, food and wine are held and the treasury room is the location of four chariots (1 for war and 2 for parades), his silver trumpet, his throne chair, statues, model boats and over 500 other relics and treasure created largely out of gold and silver. The only room decorated in wall paintings and a spray of garland is that where the king actually lies. The tomb is sealed and inscribed on the outside is the curse stating: Death comes on swift wings to him that disturbs the peace of the king. There lies King Tut.

November 4, 1922, British Egyptologist, Howard Carter has discovered the tomb of King Tutankhamun located under the remains of work men’s huts built during the Ramesside Period. It was so well hidden that it didn’t receive the same fate of many other tombs from that period of complete and total theft by robbers. The painstakingly delicate excavation of 3500 artifacts belonging to King Tut took nearly ten years. His tomb is referred to as KV62; kv meaning Valley of the Kings and the 62nd tomb found in that valley. The search was meticulous and the discovery was thrilling.

The curse, however, was believed to be true. 20 individuals involved in the uncovering of the tomb mysteriously died including the principal backer of the dig. Could it have been true or did the power of suggestion ultimately end these lives? It’s a theory shrouded in mystery and one that may never be known.

It must have been quite the honor to be able to discover that tomb and hold that golden mask with one’s own hands and look upon it with personal eyes and know that the last hands to touch it were from over 3,000 years ago. Hands that finely crafted this piece of art with finesse and passion. We have those type of artists today.
