An old woman by the name of Mary Stenberg had lost her husband Arthur to a heart attack three years ago. Her children were on the west coast and the thought of burdening them was too much for her to bear.
Her rent-controlled apartment was being sold and she was being forced to move in ninety days. There was no mercy for this 72-year-old woman. She just couldn’t catch a break.
She woke up one Tuesday morning to the sound of an emergency siren followed by chaos right outside her door. She opened to find her friend and neighbor, Jean, being worked on by an emergency medical service crew. Jean had suffered from an apparent cardiac arrest. She was lucky to be able to alert 911 before she collapsed.
Mary stood there silently watching the tragedy unfold in front of her. Jean was rushed away on a stretcher. Mary closed the door and felt a rush of adrenaline surge through her. Was that to be her fate, too? With a small amount in her bank account and all her stocks now gone to the collapse, she felt as though living became too expensive. She picked up an old clock and threw it. Thirty-seven years in this place and all for what? To be discarded like so much unwanted trash!
The crash of the clock hit the wall and it felt good. She picked up a teacup and threw that, too. Next she grabbed a long ago expired potted plant and threw that. It hit a heavy framed photo of her & Arthur on their wedding day and the frame fell and popped open wherein a key fell out followed by a slip of paper. It was a key to a safety deposit box and the paper gave the address.
Wondering what on earth Arthur had left behind without telling her, she got out of her mood and got herself ready to go out to the bank whose address was listed. The box was so heavy that she needed assistance from the security personnel. Upon opening it, she found a partial 24k gold brick, 22k, 24k gold coins and a heap of 14k gold and 18k gold jewelry as well as sterling silver jewelry. She couldn’t believe it. Where did Arthur get this?! Inside there was a note saying, “I knew your hot head would break the frame one day. Never mind where I got it! Please pick your favorite pieces of jewelry to keep. Take the rest to the firm of Ross Metals Corp at 54 W. 47th St. Talk to their reliable staff about cashing in on this small fortune. Ask to speak to Angela or Angel J. Ross.
