There was once this king who was very kind. His peopleloved him very much. He was known for the beautiful roses that grew in his extravagant garden. He had practically every flower in existence except one, the Fiore Bouganville. A very beautiful, cunning and unsavory woman loved those flowers as well. He showered her with them and then one day she was simply gone. Missing with her was a satchel full of their family’s fine silver, gold, platinum and jewelry. That very morning he had those flowers forever removed and buried along the river. The very next week a tree had sprung from there and was the exact color of those bright pink pedals that aided in his heartbreak. Rather than destroy it, he simply never went there again.
On Sunday mornings, it was the king’s ritual to spend time in his garden and enjoy the morning in silence. One particular morning he came upon a satyr sleeping off a merry night of wine drinking near his bed of roses. In most kingdoms, this would be an offense worthy of death or at the minimum, a long stay in a rat infested dungeon. But the king instead brought the old satyr into his home and gave him food and clothes, for the ones he had were very tattered.
The satyr, it turns out, was Silenus, an old school master and foster father to Dionysus, god of wine and inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy. Dionysus found out about the king’s hospitality and went to retrieve his foster father and immediately reward the king with one wish.
“Anything you like,” Dionysus assured.
The king replied without thinking, “ I want everything I touch to turn to gold!”
“As you wish King Midas.”
The wish was granted and King Midas became rich beyond his dreams. His garments transformed to gold right at that very moment. He touched his throne and it turned to gold then his dining table followed by his stairway banister and Persian rugs, all gold, gold, gold! He ran outside towards the bright pink tree and turned it to gold. He no longer would have to be reminded of that affair so long ago!
King Midas ran throughout his kingdom touching chariots, mule carts, buckets and everything else in his path. His people were elated and began to follow him around with teapots, cutlery, gardening tools and baskets for the king to turn to gold. One man paraded around with his gold cloak, a woman postured about in her gold bonnet, a young boy charged about with his gold toy sword.
Twilight soon arrived and the king became very hungry. He returned to his castle where upon his servants had a feast waiting for him. He went to grab a drumstick and it turned to hard gold! Aghast he tried an apple and also it became gold metal. He thought for a moment and grabbed a spoon and went to taste his favorite leek and potato soup and when it touched his lips, it also turned to a sheet of gold. King Midas became very alarmed and realized what he’d done. His daughter heard his despair and went to his aid. Without thinking, he went for a hug and turned her into a gold statue. His servants saw him and hid away from him. Days went by and the king was weak and starved. With a hoarse whisper he begged to Dionysus to take back his wish. Dionysus heard and granted the king his wish. Midas was instructed to wash his hands in the river Pactolus which he did. The power of his wish left his hands and went rushing into the powerful waters. The river sands became gold and the wealth that flowed from this river forever left this a wealthy kingdom.
The kingdom returned to normal except for the tree that stood by the river. That remained forever gold. In the fall, gold leaves would fall to the cool earth and villagers would take their share and sell it to a prime refiner such as Ross Metals today.
